While having some lovely conversations with our Foe-Guardians over the last couple of weeks, we have heard this phrase a lot “our fur baby seems a little different these days”.
Consequently, we have decided to write a blog about it. Hopefully it will be helpful to all.
Behaviour changes in a dog/puppy can simply occur due to weather changing, yes, weather changes.
These changes can alter your dog’s energy level, mood, comfort & sometimes appetite for food for a couple days.
Did you know that your dog's mood is affected by the weather?
Weather can have a surprising impact on your dog’s mood and behavior. Just like humans, dogs can sense changes in temperature, barometric pressure, and even seasons. Be prepared for any weather with your furry friend. Understand how hot and cold temperatures can affect dogs to keep them safe and comfortable. Prepare your canine companion for whatever the forecast brings.
While some dogs may enjoy the heat, others may need a shady spot to stay cool. Protect your pup from potential heat dangers with this helpful information, especially if they are of a more heat-sensitive breed.
From small to large breeds alike there are many dogs that don’t do great in hot weather, for example: Bully, Bulldogs, Pugs, German Shepherds, Rottweilers, Alaskan Malamute etc. They will try to avoid engagement in most activities when the weather is hot. Dog Breeds that thrive in our northern climate are German Shepherds, Huskies, Saint Bernards, Great Pyrenees, Newfoundlands - just to name few. These breeds do great in our Canadian winters, however not fond of our hot summers. Regardless of if your fur-baby is short coat or long coat, small breed or giant breed, all of our dogs get affected by weather, seasons and climate.
Here’s how different conditions might affect them:
- Sunny Days
- Increased Energy: Many dogs feel more energetic and playful in sunny weather. They often enjoy outdoor activities like walks and playtime.
- Mood Boost: Sunshine can lift both your mood and your dog’s, making them more cheerful and sociable.
- Rainy Weather
- Reduced Activity: Dogs might be less inclined to go outside, which can lead to boredom and restlessness.
- Anxiety: Some dogs are sensitive to the sound of rain and thunder, which can trigger anxiety or fear.
- Cold Temperatures
- Discomfort: Dogs can become lethargic in cold weather, especially if they don’t have a warm place to snuggle. Breeds with shorter coats may be particularly affected.
- Less Motivation: They might be less eager to go for walks, leading to decreased activity levels.
- Hot Weather
- Lethargy: High temperatures can make dogs feel sluggish. They may seek cool places to rest rather than engaging in play.
- Heat Stress: Some dogs can suffer from heat exhaustion, leading to mood changes or irritability.
- Humidity
- Discomfort: High humidity can make it hard for dogs to cool down, affecting their energy levels and mood. They might prefer to stay indoors.
- Seasonal Changes
- Fall/Winter: Some dogs may become more reserved or quiet as the days get shorter, while others might love the cooler weather for outdoor play.
- Spring/Summer: Increased daylight and warmth often lead to more active and playful behaviors.
Tips for Managing Weather Changes:
- Adapt Activities: Change your routine based on the weather. On hot days, go for walks early or late; on rainy days, engage in indoor games.
- Provide Comfort: Make sure your dog has a comfortable space to retreat to during extreme weather conditions.
- Keep Hydrated: Always provide fresh water, especially in hot weather, to keep them comfortable and happy.
By being mindful of how weather affects your dog's behavior or appetite, you can help them stay happy and healthy throughout the year!
